This is the complete, unedited audio recording of Glenn Danzig’s interview with Pushead (Brian Schroeder) for the June 1986 issue of Thrasher Magazine. Recorded in early 1986 at Glenn’s New Jersey home, the session ran several hours. The magazine condensed it into a six-page feature—this is the full raw tape, exactly as captured, with no cuts or edits.
The Setting Pushead steps into Glenn’s candle-lit room: skulls on every surface, walls covered in horror movie posters, stacks of Golden Age comics, Japanese animation figures (Astro Boy, Captain Harlock, Devilman), and crates full of Plan 9 records. Glenn greets him casually: “Oh, it’s you. Welcome.”
The timing is key—November-Coming-Fire had just come out, Misfits were long dissolved, Samhain was at its creative peak, and Glenn was already leaning into darker, heavier territory.
What’s Covered in the Full Recording
Misfits Discography & Stories Glenn obsessively details pressings and variants:
- Bullet: 10,000 total pressed (2,000 red vinyl)
- Horror Business: 5,000 copies (rare black promo variants exist)
- Walk Among Us: ~35,000 sold
- Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood: 11,000 US + 15–20,000 Germany
He relives the chaos: the UK tour opening for The Damned that went off the rails, the San Francisco Elite Club riot (cans thrown, Doyle swinging his guitar), cocaine-fueled band tensions and breakup, walking off stage in Santa Monica in the bone shirt, plus mentions of unreleased acetates and early tracks like “Teenagers from Mars” and “Who Killed Marilyn / Where Eagles Dare.”
Samhain & The Evolution “Samhain is basically the Misfits with a new name… where they’d be if Jerry practiced.” Glenn calls Unholy Passion and November-Coming-Fire his heaviest material yet. He explains re-recording “Halloween” to showcase the shift in sound, early solo ideas, and the Caroline Records reissue deal.
Philosophy & Outlook Raw, unfiltered Glenn:
- “I like violence… natural violence is part of the world.”
- On humanity: “If someone said here’s the button this will blow up the whole world I would press it right now. I think it’s all scum.”
- Death is beautiful; suicide shouldn’t be illegal; Catholicism is fascism.
- Animals (especially cats) > people.
- Horror comes from real life, TV, movies, psychic experiences, comics.
Merch & Plans in 1986
- Misfits/Samhain skateboard decks coming soon (Crimson Ghost, scarecrow, Evil Eye, skull girl designs—released summer ’86)
- Rubber Samhain skulls for fans’ rooms
- Horror video cassette series he wanted to write, direct, and star in
- Plan 9 shirts silkscreened in his basement (direct sales only, no stores)
The tape keeps all the extras the magazine cut: extra tangents on horror influences, obsessive pressing details, cats wandering in and out, and Glenn’s no-compromise delivery. It’s the clearest document of the transition from Misfits horror-punk to the demonic foundation of Danzig.
